Program Description

Social work is a valuable profession with broad opportunities to serve local, national and international populations. Accordingly, the mission of the MSW Social Work Program at West Virginia University is to train graduate students in advanced social work practice either with Individuals, Families and Groups or in Community Organizing and Social Administration. The focus of this training is to produce competent and effective practitioners committed to enhancing social well-being and quality of life with particular emphasis on vulnerable and oppressed populations in small towns and rural areas characteristic of the Appalachian region.

Career Profile

The MSW Program at WVU has enjoyed continuous accreditation from the Council on Social Work Education since the 1940s, and our BSW program was among the first programs to receive accreditation in 1974.

Graduate Program Application Requirements

Applicants must arrange for official copies of transcripts and test scores to be sent directly to the WVU Office of Graduate Admissions and Recruitment at PO Box 6510, Morgantown, WV 26506-6510. If being sent by delivery service (Federal Express, UPS, etc) requiring a street address, please use WVU Office of Graduate Admissions and Recruitment, 1500 One Waterfront Place, Morgantown, WV 26501. The program requirements listed below (if any) are in addition to the main WVU Graduate Application.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency. WVU accepts either the TOEFL or the IELTS for this purpose. Please see Office of Admissions - English Language Proficiency for more information.
