Program Description

The Division of Exercise Physiology offers a program leading to the doctor of philosophy degree (PhD) in the School of Medicine through the University’s graduate program. The program is intended to give exceptional students knowledge in basic medical and scientific areas to prepare them for careers as effective and knowledgeable researchers and teachers in the broad field of Exercise Physiology/Kinesiology. In the Division of Exercise Physiology these goals are achieved by several means. Formal course work in the sub-disciplines of Exercise Physiology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Neuroscience provides the student with the opportunity to develop a solid foundation in basic subject matter of medical sciences that can be applied to aspects of exercise and disease. The student's knowledge base will be further strengthened by participation in elective courses offered within the Division, selected courses offered by other departments within the School of Medicine and by departments in other colleges of West Virginia University.

Graduate Program Application Requirements

Applicants must arrange for official copies of transcripts and test scores to be sent directly to the WVU Office of Graduate Admissions and Recruitment at PO Box 6510, Morgantown, WV 26506-6510. If being sent by delivery service (Federal Express, UPS, etc) requiring a street address, please use WVU Office of Graduate Admissions and Recruitment, 1500 One Waterfront Place, Morgantown, WV 26501. The program requirements listed below (if any) are in addition to the main WVU Graduate Application.

English Language Proficiency

All applicants whose first language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency. WVU accepts either the TOEFL or the IELTS for this purpose. Please see Office of Admissions - English Language Proficiency for more information.

Additional Information

All students interested in the Exercise Physiology PhD program must apply through the common admissions portal for all graduate programs in the Biomedical Sciences. Choice of the Exercise Physiology program occurs during the first year of graduate study after selection of an advisor for your dissertation research that trains students in this program.

Application includes a Personal Statement, transcripts from all Colleges or Universities attended, GRE scores, and 3 letters of recommendation. Applicants must arrange to have official copies of transcripts and tests scores sent directly to the WVU Office of Graduate Admissions and Recruitment, PO Box 6510, Morgantown, WV 26506-6510.
