Program Description

The History Program provides majors with a solid liberal arts education. In the department, a wide range of courses focusing on a variety of world regions, time periods, and topic areas are offered. While receiving broad training in several regions and periods, a History major has the opportunity to develop excellent research skills to use in writing papers, examining social issues, and solving historical problems.

Opportunities are available for students to further their interest in history. Majors may qualify for membership in Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honorary.

The Department of History now offers a History honors thesis option for qualified History majors.

History majors must complete a total of 33 hours in history courses. They must choose 12 hours from the following introductory courses: HIST 101, 102, 104, 105, 106, 108, 152, 153, 179, 180, 271, and 272. They must complete History 484 and 18 additional hours beyond the introductory courses with nine hours each from two of the following three areas: United States; Europe; Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

History majors must complete a formal minor of at least 15 hours in a related field outside history but within the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences. With approval of the student’s advisor, a minor outside the College may be offered as prescribed by that department or college.

History majors must maintain a cumulative 2.2 GPA for all courses in the department. Courses in history that the student wishes to count toward the major must be completed with a grade of C or better. The minimum requirement for a major in history is 33 hours. A maximum of 42 hours in history may be counted toward graduation.
