Program Details

Program Description

The Reed College of Media’s MDS major allows students with an interest in specific media careers the opportunity to build a customized course of study that aligns with their goals. Through hands-on courses, students will gain professional skills that are relevant to today’s – and tomorrow’s – media industry.

College of MDS majors complete at least two College of Media minors plus one College of Media shared minor or a minor outside of the College.

College of Media minors include:

Advertising
Entertainment Media
Event Planning
Health Promotion
Interactive Media Design (shared with the College of Creative Arts)
Journalism
Public Relations
Sport Communication (shared with the College of Physical Activity and Sport Sciences)
Strategic Social Media

All minors except for Interactive Media Design and Journalism can be completed entirely online. Even in the online minors, students still have the option of taking some courses on ground.

To be accepted into the College of Media MDS program, students must have at least 29 completed earned hours and a 2.5 overall GPA. Students with a GPA of less than 2.5 but greater to or equal to 2.0 may be admitted into the program after completion of JRL 215 with a grade of C- or higher.

To graduate, all College of Media majors must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours.

Career Profile

The program allows students to customize their major based on their interests and career goals. For example, a student wanting to pursue a career in political public relations can select minors in Public Relations and Strategic Social Media (both in the College of Media), as well as Political Science (outside the College). Someone interested in a career in interactive media development could choose minors in Interactive Media Design and Advertising (both in the College), as well Electronic Media (outside of the College).

There are no set paths or tracks. College of Media MDS majors choose the minors that best suit them.
